The Drowned World
I love looking at reflections in water. They are like glimpses of other worlds and posibilities, existing alongside our own. This reflected building in the Leeds-Liverpool canal reminded me of JG Ballard’s novel ‘The Drowned World’, in which the oceans rise and the cities become a primal landscape. As terrifying as such a future might seem, it also seems an increasingly credible one in a time of drastic climate change. The characters in the novel eventually surrender much of their humanity in order to become part of their new reality. Perhaps one day we will have to do the same.
