Walking Through Cities: Part 23
A Gathering of Bridges
All the bridges seem to have risen from here. This was an industrial landscape once. Huge arches straddled the water. A textile mill brooded down on the workers in their cramped houses. It was from sites like these that the Industrial Revolution was born, driving the spread of the cities and the migration of the people. The Mill is a tourist site now. Cars rush across the bridges, commuting to offices and shopping centres. Still something of the past lingers here. This is tall land built from big business. Sometimes it feels like falling.
