Industrial pipes are like the vital organs of the city. Usually hidden beneath the surface, when visible they are reminders that few of us fully understand the workings of our homes any more than we do those of our own bodies. In both cases, gases and fluids are sent racing around a complex network of channels and a breakdown can spell disaster.
The functional elements of our surroundings can possess a simple beauty. The vent above, a perfect circle surrounding vertical slats, is efficiently elegant. Yet hardly anyone would stop a moment to admire such craftsmanship.
